Biology and Genetics of Honey Bees
Research work has been largely focused on honey bees (Apis mellifera), particularly in Libya and the North African region.
Research includes studying the genetic diversity of bee subspecies and their evolutionary origins, alongside analyzing mitochondrial DNA in the Arab world. It also examines the impact of long-term isolation, approximately 10,000 years, on honey bee populations in Saharan oases.
Studies have addressed the morphological characteristics of Libyan honey bees and how these characteristics are influenced by factors such as the age of wax combs.
Bee colony health has also been investigated by examining the prevalence of parasites such as Varroa mites (Varroa destructor) and bee lice (Braula coeca) in honey bee colonies in Libya.
